Properly called the gullet. This is a canal about nine inches long, which passes from the throat to the stomach. If damaged by caustic solutions it may close and require careful treatment. The X-ray can reveal the extent to which this tube is open. Infections may attack the wall of the “esophagus” as they do other portions of the body.
People sometimes have psychological conditions which cause them to avoid food. Spasms at the lower end of the esophagus may occur; these are called cardiospasms. Instances are known in which people have been known eventually to starve to death, wholly because of their reaction against swallowing.
In the condition called hysterical dysphasis, there is a mental condition which brings about inability to swallow.
Obviously, varicose veins in the esophagus which may rupture, or tumors of the esophagus, or similar serious conditions affecting this tube demand most careful study and diagnosis. Fortunately, modern surgery affords means of reaching the esophagus and operating on it. This is done frequently with great success.
